Australia’s first course for custody staff launched

Custodians are specialist organisations which have traditionally held and safeguarded financial assets for institutional investors and superannuation funds. Today their work involves managing information about an investor’s financial assets and the rights attached to those assets – corporate actions.

The custody industry handles most of the A$1.5 trillion in Australian investment by Australian and foreign investors as well as Australian investments overseas. Some 3,000 custodial staff have been the unseen back-office support workers of the investment industry.
Staff shortages and limited training have characterised the industry to date.

The Australian Custodial Services Association (ACSA) recognised the need for greater professionalism in the custody industry.

The ACSA Accredited Program specifically designed to meet these needs, has been launched. It is offered as a Certificate IV in Financial Services and a Diploma of Financial Services.

Bill Warner, Managing Director of Financial Education Professionals which is offering the program for ACSA, said ‘the high level of cooperation and consultation across the custody industry has made this program possible’.
‘Fiercely competitive custody firms are working together on the course design, delivery and in many cases even sharing facilities to train Australia’s future custody professionals.’
